"I will do anything for love". Or not.

At the recent Miss Universe 2011 question and answer round, Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup was asked: Would you change your religious beliefs to marry the person that you love? She said: "I would not... The first person that I love is my God. The person who loves me should love my God, too."

I'd say, that is one of the most if not the strongest statements I've heard from a woman for years. Not politically correct. The politically correct statement would have been the Twilight-type, I-would-do-anything-for-love kind of answer. Might have even cost her the crown too. But that's how you should stand by your principles.

This statement is inspiring not just for the teen agers who are willing to compromise their belief for the sake of love, but for all of us who encounter daily decisions -- will I stand firm for my God, or will I compromise to gain the here-and-now?

In all aspects of life, we decide who should come first -- our God, or our "god".

I would add, Ms. Supsup, that if the person you love doesn't love your God, maybe in the long run, it will not work at all.

Hey, she's 3rd runner up. Not bad!

In the beginning, God...

The most powerful book started with the most powerful words - "In the beginning God..."

God is always the starting point. He spoke and there came out things.

If we want something good to come out of our relationships, our work, our goals in life, it has to always start with God. He is the source of everything, the beginning of everything.

You can be funny and miss the main point by being funny.

I have to admit, I'm not a funny guy. I'm trying to be funny sometimes, and I just love my wife for laughing at my jokes (even if I know people will laugh at her for laughing at my jokes :) )

But seriously, I'm totally ok with not being funny as long as I am getting the message across to the other line clear and simple.

You want to know when being funny is NOT a good thing? Read on.

I posted a simple $10 task requirement at oDesk. It's very simple I asked possible respondents to just tell me if they can do it straight and easy and not go through the long canned messages. Others are good, others totally missed it, but this one's special. Here's the dude's cover letter:

I was laughing when I read this. Really, he gave me some entertainment. He was trying to be funny and catchy on his communication. And by being funny he totally missed the receiving end of his communication. So, in appreciation of his hard work, I declined his application and wrote him a simple, straight forward reply:
Funny
Lesson: make people laugh, that's cool. But don't forget that nothing beats a straight forward, honest communication.

Have a wonderful new year!

Every new year brings hope, new beginnings and promises. My prayer is for all of us to experience the same. It's the new year! And it brings optimism and excitement! I AM excited for 2011!

With the new year also comes the typical practices of luck (bring out the rounded fruits!), feng sui and other similar beliefs. Let's be reminded that our life is first and foremost a gift from God. He has a great plan for our lives and so, instead of trusting your "luck" or some eastern practices, let's pursue God's plan for our lives. That's the surest way to living a life of blessings and joyfulness.

With that said, I wish everyone a Happy New Year! Come on, 2011 -- bring it on!

"I can't do it, Lord..."

Here’s an interesting conversation between God and Moses recorded in the Bible (Exodus 3,4).

Moses: “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” …
God: “I will be with you”.
Moses: “What if they do not believe me or listen to me…”
God: (shows him how to make miracles)… “This is so that they may believe that the Lord, the God of your fathers… has appeared to you”
Moses: “Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow in speach and tongue”.
God: “Who gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute? Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say”
Moses: “Pardon your servant, Lord. Please send someone else”.

I feel Moses’ hesitation because of his perceived limitations. But, at this point, I think God became irritated of the excuses because in 4:14, it says “Then the Lord’s anger burned against Moses…“

You want to see God burn in anger? You think he’s angry only when you sin?

Tell him you can’t do it. That you’re not capable. That you have limitations. You just cant. Then you’ll see fire go down from heaven and roast you alive.

You are made by God the way he wants you created. He gave you strengths and limitations. Nonetheless, he has great works, a purpose, a task specially fitted for you. When you sense God calling you to do something in the church, in your workplaces, in your family, in your career and feels that you can’t do it … remember Moses.
