Resurgence 2.5 http://resurgence.gamboa.ph Personal. Family. Faith. posterous.com Sun, 25 Dec 2011 12:25:00 -0800 What are we, a bunch of radio commentators? http://resurgence.gamboa.ph/what-are-we-a-bunch-of-radio-commentators http://resurgence.gamboa.ph/what-are-we-a-bunch-of-radio-commentators

We're all devastated by the sight of people who died and was affected by the recent typhoon that hit Northern Mindanao. While I've seen really kind hearted people using the internet for good, most just use it as venue to criticize.

All the finger pointing won't help at this point. Let's stop criticizing the President or PAGASA for what happened in Mindanao. Let's just stop talking and grab our wallets and help Sendong's victims.

Choose your agency: Redcross, ABS-CBN Sagip Kapamilya, GMA Kapuso, TV5 Kapatid Foundation, Operation Blessing (our family's choice NGO http://www.obphil.com/v2/page/p/mindanao-needs-you -- it has a credit card facility, if you have the capability, you don't have any reason not to help). Whatever it is, let's just act.

What's saddens me more is that tragedies like this reflect our character as a nation. Last night was the worst: we even knit picked on an actress' innocent tweet to have a chance to criticize the President? What are we now, a bunch of radio commentators? I don't know what to say.

Sun, 25 Sep 2011 08:38:00 -0700 Pinoy's were 2nd in 1990 Asian Games under Jaworski (just sayin') http://resurgence.gamboa.ph/pinoys-are-2nd-in-1990-asian-games-under-jawo http://resurgence.gamboa.ph/pinoys-are-2nd-in-1990-asian-games-under-jawo

First of all, let me just say that that we're so proud of the 4th place finish of the current Philippine National Basketball team, Smart-Gilas at the recently concluded FIBA-Asia Championships. It's been a long time since we accomplished this much in Asian basketball. According to basketball historians, the best finish we had at FIBA in recent years was in 1987. With the help of a foreign coach, the basketball program has definitely achieved something great today!

But having said that, I'd like to remind everyone -- especially those who've been saying that foreign coaches are better than Filipinos -- that back in 1990, the All-Filipino (no naturalized) PBA dream team composed of Chito Loyzaga,  Mon Fernandez, Alvin Patrimonio, Samboy Lim, Ronnie Magsanoc, Benjie Paras, Franz Pumaren, Hector Calma, Yves Dignadice, Paul Alvarez, Allan Caidic and Jerry Codinera and a coaching staff headed by the Living Legend himself, Robert Jaworski -- finished 2nd place in the Asian Games. We made it to the top and played against  China. It's not FIBA, but hey, the opponents are the same.

So, people, let's stop the Pinoy vs. non-Pinoy coaching debate-non-sense. Let's celebrate our current achievements, as well as the past.

As a sports addict back in my childhood days, I can still remember the excitement those times have created. Here's a clip -- the best that I can find at YouTube -- of that great days of Philippine basketball. This is mostly of Samboy Lim. Enjoy, nonetheless.

At the recent Miss Universe 2011 question and answer round, Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup was asked: Would you change your religious beliefs to marry the person that you love? She said: "I would not... The first person that I love is my God. The person who loves me should love my God, too."

I'd say, that is one of the most if not the strongest statements I've heard from a woman for years. Not politically correct. The politically correct statement would have been the Twilight-type, I-would-do-anything-for-love kind of answer. Might have even cost her the crown too. But that's how you should stand by your principles.

This statement is inspiring not just for the teen agers who are willing to compromise their belief for the sake of love, but for all of us who encounter daily decisions -- will I stand firm for my God, or will I compromise to gain the here-and-now?

In all aspects of life, we decide who should come first -- our God, or our "god".

I would add, Ms. Supsup, that if the person you love doesn't love your God, maybe in the long run, it will not work at all.

Hey, she's 3rd runner up. Not bad!

Thu, 02 Jun 2011 02:11:28 -0700 Undeserved grace http://resurgence.gamboa.ph/undeserved-grace http://resurgence.gamboa.ph/undeserved-grace
Thank you for the undeserved grace. This weak, sinful man is loved and accepted, only because of Your unfathomable grace.

---

Grace by Which I stand

Lord, the feelings are not the same,

I guess I'm older, I guess I've changed.

And how I wish it had been explained, that as you're growing you must remember,

That nothing lasts, except the grace of God, by which I stand, in Jesus.

I know that I would surely fall away, except for grace, by which I'm saved.

Lord, I remember that special way,

I vowed to serve you, when it was brand new.

But like Peter, I can't even watch and pray, one hour with you,

And I bet, I could deny you too.

But nothing lasts, except the grace of God, by which I stand, in Jesus.

I'm sure that my whole life would waste away, except for grace, by which I'm saved.

But nothing lasts, except the grace of God, by which I stand, in Jesus.

I know that I would surely fall away, except for grace, by which I'm saved

Sun, 29 May 2011 21:49:59 -0700 Meeting THE Arnold Gamboa http://resurgence.gamboa.ph/meeting-the-arnold-gamboa http://resurgence.gamboa.ph/meeting-the-arnold-gamboa Before reading below, read this first: I'm not THE Arnold Gamboa.

Facebook has done wonders -- it has changed the way we interact and has brought high school classmates, old friends and even fans and celebrities together.

So, when fans of the 70s hit group Apat na Sikat member Arnold Gamboa started emailing me on Facebook and messaging me on Twitter thinking that I'm THE ONE, I started to look for the real guy on Facebook. And we eventually become Facebook "friends".

Today, together with Joy and Josh, I finally met the guy who made me famous among my teachers growing up. Who made "name recall" a tool for my advantage.

I'm technically not a fan, he quit showbiz even before I started watching TV -- my mom is, no wonder she named me after him.

But I am NOW! The guy is so friendly, so accommodating. So down to earth and humble, you'll never trace any hint that he's one of the few who dominated Philippine showbiz back in his time.

We encouraged him to go back to showbiz. Seriously, if you'll see him in person, you'll know that he'll give Gabby Concepcion or Albert Martinez the run for their money. And with his fanbase still intact, I'm sure it's going to be an easy ride up. Of course, it's not an easy thing to do, I guess. He's currently an executive at a prime hotel, who would want to exchange that with the ugly reality of showbiz tsismis. But then, once an actor, always an actor. So who knows! :D

Thanks, Kuya Not for your kindness and for accommodating us. Thanks for the breakfast. Sa uulitin. :D

Mom, these pictures are for you. Hehehe...

Tue, 26 Apr 2011 08:41:32 -0700 To my Adventist friends - an invitation to a symposium with Atty. John Tulio : The Tipping Points of Grace http://resurgence.gamboa.ph/to-my-adventist-friends-an-invitation-to-a-sy http://resurgence.gamboa.ph/to-my-adventist-friends-an-invitation-to-a-sy
Tulio-jj_web

If you grew up in an Adventist community in the 90s, you know the Tulios -- and some of you probably know Atty. John Tulio. He's become a mentor to a lot of Adventists, including myself, in terms of revisiting our belief system and focusing on God's grace. He has written several materials, which includes "Basic 10", a group study guide on the basics of the gospel and grace. Just recently, he finished and released "Tipping Points of Grace: Age old dogmas re-exammined."

He's currently here in the Philippines for a short ministry visit. We're planning to sponsor a symposium where he will discuss the "Tipping points".

You may have a lot of questions in mind about the Sabbath, the Investigative Judgement, Immortality of the Soul, on Ellen White and other "pillars of faith". You sincerely want to know the "other side of the coin". This is a great time to hear and inquire about those things in an open, friendly environment.

We're planning to have it this Saturday afternoon at 2 pm. Depending on the number of attendees, it can be held at Tiara Oriental Hotel in Makati City or in a room in a San Juan condo. So, if you're interested to join, please let me know by indicating in the comments. Pass the word around too. The more, the merrier. (If we'll hit 20, we'll probably be able to use a more comfortable place at Tiara Hotel).

So in summary:

I'm inviting you and your friends to a symposium:

Speaker: Atty. John Tulio
Topic: Tipping Points of Grace
Date and time: This Saturday, April 20, 2 pm
Venue: Makati or San Juan (Depending on the number of attendees)

See you there!

Fri, 08 Apr 2011 21:00:00 -0700 Who brought Willie Revillame down? http://resurgence.gamboa.ph/who-brought-willie-revillame-down http://resurgence.gamboa.ph/who-brought-willie-revillame-down

Quick summary: Willie Revillame is a popular and controversial game show host. He has been controversial before. But his latest controversy is the alleged mistreatment of a "Willing Willie" March 12 episode where he was seen making fun of a 6-year old kid while dancing in what is perceived to be inappropriate. The video was posted on YouTube, Facebook and other social media. An avalanche of accusations of "child abuse" and exploitation of the poor came from all angles on the internet -- from blogs to Facebook to Twitter. Government agencies such as the DSWD, MTRCB, CHR followed suit condemning the act.

Because of pressure, advertisers started to pull out of the show, until last night, it has almost none. While Revillame blamed everyone else on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube except him, the real reason while he's stopping for 2 weeks is simple: there were no sponsors to pay for the bills. It's a business decision first and foremost and secondly, in my opinion, to defuse whatever the MTRCB will come up with next week.

He went down -- at least for 2 weeks (according to him) -- and he fell hard.

Let's get to the bottom line: Who brought Willie Revillame down?

Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Blogs -- the social media -- brought him down.

The middle class that uses social media brought him down.

The advertisers who know that the middle class has the purchasing power brought him down.

His arrogance against the middle class brought him down.

He brought himself down.

Lesson? Do not insult the intelligence of the middle class. We know that the issue is about. However he tries to make this a class war, we know that this is not being for or against the poor. This is for decency in our society. This is protection against those who are being exploited. And this is standing for what we believe is right.

Thu, 17 Mar 2011 07:09:00 -0700 A letter to Lifers: We are agents of hope http://resurgence.gamboa.ph/a-letter-to-lifers-we-are-agents-of-hope http://resurgence.gamboa.ph/a-letter-to-lifers-we-are-agents-of-hope

Hi Makati Lifers,

I've learned from Kuya Prudy that some visitors came to us through our website. Intrigued, I went to Google Analytics to analyze the traffic coming into our website. It wasn't high as I expected, but what I saw moved me to tears.

I looked at the keywords used by those who found our website through Google Search. Most are common keywords, but one keyword caught my attention: "hope".(See image below) Do you know what does that mean? It means 4 people looking for hope -- maybe they are depressed, or empty, or looking for meaning in life and seems there is no hope, saw our website and perhaps decided to drop by one of those Sundays. By the grace of God, I pray that they experienced God when they visited LifeChurch Makati and found hope.

The challenge for all of us is to continue to become agents of hope. As what we learned from our past message series, we are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. We will continue to do things no one else is doing to reach those people without hope that others are probably not reaching.
